Commissioning of U 188

Post by oldhoweboy » 22 Sep 2018 13:17

Hello
Have been looking at the commissioning images of U 188 on ebay.de.
Who would have been the "top" officer, in this case a Korvettenkapitan, I think, at the ceremony in Aug 1942?
Would it be the commander of the traing flotilla to which the boat was assigned or the active flotilla it would be joining or someone else?
Rgds, Nobby

In his autobiography "Das Boot U-188" as told to Klaus Willmann, publ. Rosenheimer 2008, Anton Staller states that "there were some senior naval officers present" when the boat was commissioned on 5 August 1942 but makes no other reference.

The photograph shows the crew paraded in three ranks on the after casing. Ahead of the deck gun is a warrant officer facing the winter-garden. This would possibly be Obersteuermann Heinrich Korn, (III WO). On the winter-garden facing astern seen from their rear are an Oberleutnant (probably the commander, Lüdden)saluting, Matrose Anton Staller (centre) and Matrosenobergefreiter Will Pollner raising the war flag.
