Brave crew was awarded the Iron Cross!

Post by tigre » 21 Oct 2018 00:25

Hello to all :D; a query: The brave crew was awarded the Iron Cross.

The German Navy fought gallantly and with great success. By February 28, 1940 Kplt. Schultze’s U-Boat was able to sink 16 ships for a loss of 114,000 Gross Register Tons. The brave crew was awarded the Iron Cross, while the dashing captain was presented the Knight’s Cross by the Führer. AFAIK at that time the U 48 had carried out 4 patrols as follows:

1º 19 Aug 1939 Kiel 17 Sep 1939 Kiel 30 days 3 ships sunk (14,777 tons).
2º 4 Oct 1939 Kiel 25 Oct 1939 Kiel 22 days 5 ships sunk (37,153 tons).
3º 20 Nov 1939 Kiel 20 Dec 1939 Kiel 31 days 4 ships sunk (25,618 tons).
4º 24 Jan 1940 Kiel 26 Feb 1940 Kiel 34 days 4 ships sunk (31,526 tons).

But checking in the historisches-marinearchiv I've found Leutnant (Ing.) Erich Zürn EK II on Feb 25, 1940; OStrm Horst Hofmann awarded EK II on Feb 25, 1940; StOMasch Otto-Rudolf-Wilhelm Schulze EK II on Feb 25, 1940

Any chance to Id those guys below? Cheers. Raúl M 8-).

Hello to all :D; more.
U 37, under Korvettenkapitän Werner Hartmann, left on 28.01.1940 from Wilhelmshaven. U 37 could sink on this enterprise 8 ships with 24.539 GRT. After 30 days, U 37 returned to Wilhelmshaven on 27.02.1940.
After checking in the historisches-marinearchiv I've found only Oberleutnant zur See Asmus Nicolai Clausen EK II on Feb 28, 1940.

Hello to all :D; more.
Kplt. Julius Lemp received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on August 14, 1940, but returned to port (Kiel) only on August 30, 1940.
* this round figure is reached without counting the Athenia and five ships sunk by mines.
