German U Boats

#1

Post by USAUBOATS » 20 Nov 2018, 17:14

Here are a few photos, of the U 234,U 805 and the U 873 and U 234 with the U 873 along side:
Photo 1 is not the U 234 as the photo states.
Photo 2 and Photo 3 are the same photo but with differ U-Boat names.
My question is this, how do I tell whick boat it is The U 805 or the U 873?
Thanks for any help
Bill

Hi U 873 Had a gun on the front deck three quarters of the way the length of the schorkel. It also had life raft containers in front of the conning tower. U805 had non of these in that position. All of your photos are of U 873.

Hi Again Just read all the post. The boat on the right of the first picture is U 234 the raised portion of the front deck is for the mines. So the pictures are of U 873 and U 234 U 873 being the smaller boat.

Hi U 530, 190 and 858 had a ramped section leading to a large flat area on the forward part of the cutaway deck. U 530 also had the tracks on the deck running down the centre.
U 883 and 873 had a flatter cutaway section with a small raised piece at the front. U 873 had it's tracked area running alongside the seahull or casing.
U 977 had the magnetic compass cover (at the base of the conning tower) removed in later pictures. To the right of this the deck railings have two horizontal bars U 766 had these too. These two bars are rare on U boats the only other picture I have seen is one supposedly of U 320- but this was commissioned twice so I cannot be sure of that picture. So it is U 977 and U 530 the white colour may be USN white lead paint.

Thanks I was just surprise to see the white. But they did paint it before they left Rio de Janeiro Naval Base, Brazil.
This may be just before the U 530 got painted black or dark grey
Thanks

Lets talk about this photo of the U 505 in Bermuda. Are those Americans on the deck? Is this the U 505 ?

Hi, Not U 505 but another boat surrendering in Scotland, the American on the small boat is holding the kriegsmarine ensign.
U 505 had at the time of its capture damage to the port railing forward of the conning tower just where the crew, who are Germans are gathered. The officers caps on the boat are German.

Hello,
Look the position of the FuMB Ant.3 Bali antenna and the position of the gas exaust. At the time of May 1945 the Bali antenna was between the two periscopes and the gas exaust was under the waterline. On the picture we can see Bali in front of the FuMB Ant.5 Samoa house and the gas exaust over the waterline. This were equipments from 1944 but wee can have some exeptions. U 802 had the exaust gas over the waterline but with a rectangular shape. The only U-boats typ IX without Schnelltauchbach in Scotland were: U 155, U 532 ( Turm Unbau II ), U 541, U 802, U 806, U 1230, U 1231.
U 505 had a half circle cap over the exaust gas.

Best regards,
Lionfish.
