Ger. Submarine Command target a specific ship?

Post by Felix C » 20 Feb 2019 19:44

I just read a bit on U581 and see that it was directed, along with U 402, to the Azores and sink the damaged Llangibby Castle.

I have not read/heard before of a specially targeted ship. Are there other cases where a specific vessel was targeted? I do not know if the Ger. knew the Llangibby Castle's name. The orders appear to be to intercept a large auxiliary/troopship which had taken refuge in the Azores.

Well thanks in advance.

I ask because I read of a similar situation in WW1. It struck me as interesting as does this and of course any other cases.

German command directed sus against damaged or just spoted ships, this was common practice. i can rememeber that they was directed against damaged EDINBURGH (or TRINIDAD?) in Arctic.
