
Paint scheme!.
With respect to the final coat of paint on the U-boats, the most common thing to see was the superstructure of the hull with a light gray (Hellgrau)/dark gray (Dunkelgrau) finish and white numbers, but at the beginning, in the years 1935/36 I have seen newly commissioned submersibles finished with very light/white (on the sail) paint and dark numbers (see photo below). How common was this? shipyard policy?
In the Kriegsmarine U-Boat Colors & Markings by Dougie Martindale there is nothing about it and it mentions that the Hellgrau 50 layer in direct sunlight looks much lighter, but I don't know......
