U-Boot Typ XXIX G1, also known as XXVI WE, was a design study for an Elektroboat derivative of the Wather Boat XXVI W, drawn up in the Summer of 1944 by the IBG (Ingenieurbüro Glückauf) design office. It is accordingly quite similar to the XXVI W, but with the following main differences:
- Walther propulsion and fuel removed
- second diesel engine and main electrical motor added
- additional batteries
- bow torpedo tubes increased from 4 to 6; accordingly, total of 12 tubes (6 forward, 2x3 oblique to the rear ("Schneeorgel"))
Attached are two photos of a RC scale model; source: one of Eberhardt Rösslers books.
Interesting is the modellers choice for boat number: U 4505.
U 4501-4600 were the numbers allocated to Type XXVI W in 1944. During wars end, the order was cut down to only four: U 4501-4504.
So, the modeller did a clever thing and designated his model the fifth Type XXVI boat to have been intended to be built in 1945... (even though in reality this Type XXVI WE was never fully designed nor ordered into production...)
