Seems like a waste to me, and inappropriate, to relegate them to training. After all, they were not much like the U-Boats the crews would be assigned to later on.

Consider that the C.T. was similar to British subs, and you have a fine opportunity for shenanigans in or around RN bases, The range and striking power could have allowed it to be used the way the IX boats (XI ?) were in distant waters such as the South Atlantic or Caribbean. And with a gun like that they could have had a lot of fun that subs armed with 88mm guns couldn't dream of vs. shore installations.

One thing I wonder; was it large enough to deal with serious pack-ice? Large and sturdy enough, I mean.
The Type VII were famous but to me they appepar to be Mr. Bare Bloody minimum, and there were so few of the larger boats... you would think the Admiralty could always have a mission in mind for these bad boys.

First Patrol.

U A, under Kapitänleutnant Hans Cohausz, left Kiel on 06.06.1940. After the march through the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, as well as being escorted to Brunsbüttel, the boat operated in the North and Central Atlantic, the Canary and Cape Verde Islands, and off Freetown. The boat was supplied by the PENGUIN on July 18, 1940 with 85 m³ of fuel, on July 19, 1940 with lubricating oil, fresh bread, drinking and washing water, on July 21, 1940 with artillery ammunition, on July 23, 1940 with four torpedoes, on July 24, 1940 with seven Torpedoes, and on July 25, 1940 with the rest of fuel and provisions. U A was able to sink 7 ships with a total of 40,606 GRT on this sail. The return march led via Wilhelmshaven (escort), Brunsbüttel, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal to Kiel. After 85 days and covered about 15,250 nm, U A returned to Kiel on 08/30/1940.

The following were sunk:

06/16/1940 - the British ANDANIA 13,950 GRT
06/26/1940 - the Norwegian CRUX 3,828 GRT
07/14/1940 - the Norwegian SARITA 5,824 GRT
08/03/1940 - the Yugoslav RAD 4,201 GRT
08/15/1940 - the Greek ASPASIA 4,211 GRT
08/19/1940 - the Hungarian KELET 4,295 GRT
08/20/1940 - the Panamanian TUIRA 4,397 GRT

In the picture the UA returning to Kiel on Aug 30, 1940 under Kapitänleutnant Hans Cohausz.The return march led via Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal to Kiel. U A was able to sink 7 ships with a total of 40,606 GRT on this patrol.
