As the Norwegian Kystverket are trying to find a solution for the 60-70 tons of Mercury in U-864, some sonarphotos have been released:

Was it normal for U-Boats to carry 64 tons of mercury?
Strange.
All the best

Hi Andreas,
Japan was very short of Mercury which was supplied to them by German U-Boats, inside the pressure hull I believe, and which returned to Germany with cargoes of Tin and Rubber which were short in Germany. A number of U-Boats made these trips, which goes to show the extraordinary lengths people will go to obtain rare materials during war time! I cannot remeber the source offhand, but it was in a book written by a former U-Boat capitan I think. When I get some time, I will go to the local library and see if I can find it.
