OoB Poland 44-45

Post by Alex Yeliseenko » 13 Jul 2006, 03:42

Hello friends!

Tell what was OoB at the Polish army in the West and in the East for January, 1st 1944, on August, 1st on January, 1944th and 1, 1945? What divisions had tanks and SPG?

Whether there are data about the Polish losses in tanks in Italy and in the Northwest Europe in 1943-1945?

Best regards!

There was no Polish "army" in the west. In the Italian theater there was the II Polish Corp, which contained the 3rd and 5th infantry divisions plus 2nd armored brigade. That was the largest concentration of Polish troops in the west.

In the NWE theater the 1st Polish armored division was attached first to I Canadian Corp (of British 2nd Army) and then to the 1st Canadian army. Another Polish unit that fought in NWE was the Polish 1st Parachute brigade, which saw limited action in Op Market-Garden.

All of these units were organized along the lines of British Commonwealth formations, and equipped with British kit. The 1st Polish armored division and 2nd Polish armored brigade were the ones with tanks and SPGs as part of their TO&E. These were generally Shermans (with Cromwells in the recce regiment of the 1st PAD), M10 Wolverines in the AT regiment and Sexton SPA in the artillery.

What do you men by "limited action"??????

The 1st Independent Parachute Brigade spent more time in the line than the 1st (British) Airborne Division during MARKET/GARDEN.

There are two uses of the term "army". One denotes the organization of all the soldiers of a country. The other refers to an integral combat unit. The Polish term for the first: "Polskie Sily Zbrojne - PSZ" = Polish Army, or literally Polish Armed Forces. This, of course, existed in the West. It includes the Home Army in Poland. Limited in relation to the other Polish formations in the west, not limited action for Op M-G.
