Gebhk thank you for your explanation. I thought admiral Horthy was more limited in his power after operation Margerita when German proxy governament was established in Budapest and Szalasi Arrow party legalized and got influence on governament, but apparently that was only in October 1944 when Arrow cross party took full control with support of Hitler.

Steve concerning your question how people from Carpatho Ukraine after the occupation from Hungary came in to the SU encyclopedia of Ukraine is saying this were mostly young people fleeing Hungarian occupation through mountains in 1940-41 so in time when SU and occupied Carpatho Ukraine had already direct borders. This refugees were later persecuted by Soviet stalinist regime which was quite a normal practice for this regime.

Thank you S/L for explaining how these people reached the USSR, Does the encyclopedia of Ukraine say anything about the claimed killing of 27,000 people in a few weeks by the Hungarians? This is huge number of people for an area whose prewar population according to the 1921 census for Carpathian Ruthenia was 592,044 and which according to Wikipedia had a population in 1941 of 621,906. That over a 100,000 people had either been murdered or had fled between 1939 and 1941 and yet the population in 1941 was still higher than 1921 is amazing.

Steve the article about Carpatho Ukraine or Transcarpathia on U. encyclopedia says only Hungary first promised autonomy for the land but then it was leading a policy of terror against Ukrainian activists.

However Wikipedya is saying that Hungarian army was killing captured Ukrainian militiamen, they were tied and then thrown in river Tysa. It seems unarmed youth supported the militiamen too during the fighting with Hungarian army and likely they were also persecuted.

The remains of Czechoslovak army however retreated without greater fighting to Romania together with political leadership of the country. President of Carpatho Ukraine was after war captured by NKVD and then soon died in prison. It should be said also that after Munich agreement Carpatho Ukraine had the right of self determination wtitten in the constitution of Czechoslovakia.
