Let's Build 1st Polish Army, (LWP) 1945

#1

Post by David C. Clarke » 03 Jan 2004, 01:07

Hi Guys, trying to get a handle on Polish Forces fighting with the Red Army in 1945.
So far I have this OOB of the 1st Polish Army attached to the 1st Byelorussian Front for the Berlin Operation:

1st Polish Army (Lt. Gen. S.G. Poplowski)

1st Polish Infantry Division "Tadiuscz Kosciuszko" (Maj. General W. Bewziuk)
2nd Polish Infantry Division
3rd Polish Infantry Division
4th Polish Infantry Division
6th Polish Infantry Division
1st Polish Cavalry Brigade
4th Polish Heavy Tank Regt.
13th Polish Self Propelled Assault Artillery Regt.
7th Polish Assault Artillery Battalion

As you can see, there are tons and tons of information missing, including Commander's names, equipment used and general organization. Any contribution to this Thread will be vastly appreciated, but please state your sources for the benefit of others.

Let's have some fun!

Best Regards, David

Just a footnote for now. There is a photo of a 4th Heavy Tank regiment IS-2m on page 87 of Zaloga's "Armor on the Eastern Front. The equipment of the Polish First Armored Brigade is still open to speculation, but there are photos of T-34/85s in Gdynia in 1945.

Of course, 4th Heavy Tanks Regiment was armed with IS-2Ms, no doubt.

Yes, there were T-34/85s, but the brigade received them probably after the liberation of Gdynia. The brigade suffered very serious losses during liberation of Gdansk and Gdynia. The Soviets had proposed to arm the brigade with Shermans, however the commander of the brigade refused and waited for the new T-34/85. I suppose the brigade was armed with T-34/76 during liberation of Gdynia.
Best regards,
Chris

They had some (20 at least) T-34-85 since begining of October 1944.

A site created by LWP reenactors has a page featuring vintage photos of the original LWP in action. It can be found at this web address:
