How is D-Day (the Allied liberation of France beginning with the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944) viewed and remembered by the French people nowadays?

There's always rememberance "celebration" in Normandy every year.
We learn about the date at school as early as CM2 (~10yo) but we study it further in 3ème (~14yo) and in 1ère (~16yo) and there are school trip to the beaches and museums if you don't live far from the region. It's not a bank-holiday, only the 8th May is for WW2.
