FREE FRANCE Badge dated 5/39 ?

Post by Nandus » 09 Nov 2019 19:21

Hello,
Can someone explain the date. As far as know the Free France was founded in 6/1940 by Degaulle in London . The Croix de Lorraine with cornflowers….
The half moon will stand for Tunia or Algeria ?
Thanks in advance.

Not a Free France badge. It’s an air force unit badge and the “date” is not a date but the “5th. escadrille of the 39th. escadre”. See more here:

The Croix de Lorraine is all but specific to Free France but first of all with Lorraine, so you can find it everywhere in the insignias badges of the French Army before 1940 with units who had something to do with this province, as garrison, the History, recalling the participation in the battle of Verdun (city in Lorraine) and others reasons etc...
