Operations of Free French Sub "Perle"

The FF SS "Rubis" has had a lot of coverage of her minelaying sorties throughout the war. What of her sister, Perle, which served with the FFNL but was sunk in error by the RAF in 1944? Did she see much action?

Hello Dave,
No same class Sub career could be more contrasted.
Rubis was deployed in the North Sea and saw a lot of action, then survived the war. La Perle, deployed in the Méditerranean, did (I think) a single war mission in June 1940 against Italy: a defensive minelaying off Corsica. She was not a FNFL boat. She was rotting in Toulon until September 1942 then was eventually sent to Dakar (small action: under the false indentity of a 600t French submarine in order to avoid British capture crossing the Strait). She turned "allies" with Dakar ralliement the next December. She was then sent in the USA for refitting and modernization where it was discovered that, beside being identical to Rubis, she was very different and it took a very long time. In June 1944, she was ready for action and assigned to a new base in Scotland (Holy Loch). During her transit trip, she was misidentified as a U-Boot and sunk by a Swordfish.

After the Torch operation, the french submarine Perle participed to 4 special missions in 1943:

June 24 - July 07: 5 persons must be disembarked at Cap Camarat but the operation has failed (France)
September 14 - September 19: 30 men of the commando unit and 7 tons of flour are discharged at Ajaccio (Corsica)
October 15 - October 18: 1 person disembarked, 4 embarked in front of Barcelona (Spain)
October 23 - October 30: 6 persons disembarked at Cap Camarat (France)

The Perle was sent to the USA in December 1943 to be "upadted" :D

Hello Hautpoul, Can you tell me the source of your information on Perle's special missions and if you have any further information on other special missions by other French submarines?

Kind Regards
Gus
