I know that, of course, anyone in industries that helped feed the war effort (scrap steel, etc.) benefited well.
I'm more interested in ways that people benefited to others' expense, or in illegal or frowned upon ways, or anything else
What were some ways that people under Axis occupation benefited monetarily?

Criminals who were involved in black-market & smuggling, as always a few of those got lucky and lived large for a while. Outside occupied Europe Spain, Turkey, and particularly Portugal made money off the people leaving Europe & the goods coming in. Portugal benefitted from a bidding war for the Wolfram ore its miners worked overtime to extract. Thieves looted the ore the Germans and Brits had paid for, then sold it to smugglers who moved it to Spain and resold it to the desperate Germans at yet higher prices.

Criminals generally benefit to others' expense even at the best of times. During the occupation it wasn't really different only much more.
A rather unusual way were denunciations, people used the Gestapo/Police as a tool to "disappear" their enemies - usually their neighbors. This happened shockingly frequently.
Another would be bribe solicitation and extortion. Food falsification and adulteration was a huge problem too.

You have the case of the famous industrialist Louis Renault. Louis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Ren ... strialist)) founded the famous automobile brand in France (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault). He was very rich and very famous.
It is still debated wether he collaborated deliberately as a nazi fan, or if he just obeyed unwillingly...
Whatever, since he didnt stop his industry during the occupation, he was trialed at the Libération He died in jail in dark circomstances during his trial.
Many said he was assassinated in order not to reveal a scandal...
Why so much hate ? Louis Renault was hated by communists. Before the war he was accused of having ordered the assassination of several communists. He was really known as anti-communist. Some say that communists killed him while he was in jail as a revenge... At the time of his death, communist power was very high in the country.
Renault car company was officially therefore nationalized as a punishment for collaboration after the war.
