French armour camouflage

Post by modelbouw nederland » 31 Mar 2020 17:35

Good day fellow forum members,

I'm currently building a model kit off the Somua S 35 from Tamiya.
And there are still some questions that my research on the project couldn't answer for me.
First off all, how did the French apply the camouflage patterns on their tanks?
Second one, how do I find very specific information about the units that are listed in the markings and paintings list? Or, how do I find information and other reference material about the units that did had Somua S 35 tanks attached to them?

Additional unit information off the paintings and markings included in the box:
18th Dragoon Regiment
13th Dragoon Regiment
4th Cuirassier Regiment

I hope that you are able to help me out with this topics.
Have a nice day,
Modelbouw Nederland

SOMUA had several camouflage types,
you have a part of them in the sample page from the book Peintures de Guerre - Un Siècle de Camouflage de l'Armée Française :
http://www.minitracks.fr/camouflage.htm

SOMUA S35 were in service with 1er 2e 3e 4e 7e Cuirassiers and 13e 18e 29e Dragons

First off all I want to thank you all so far for the information you gave me.
But, I can't understand any off this. Because, I don't speak any word French.
And the browsers I currently use, are not able to translate all off it for me.
Maybe I need to learn some words in French?
Do I need to take another browser?
Or do I need to take the old but reliable approach off gathering information by using books?
Anyway, thank you all for the information.

Thank you Loïc for sharing this with me. I can read the English part. Interesting to read, and a weird camouflage pattern if you ask me.
What were those plates on the French tanks such as this one?
