France Nr 10 Commando unit
France Nr 10 Commando unit
Please could anyone give me some information of this french commando unit? Here's a pic from Corbis showing Henri Giraud, Grl D'Astier De La Vigerie and Captain Kieffer (Chief of the french commandos). Pic taken in the french HQ in London, July 1943.
It will also be appreciated some info regarding the uniform (beret, insignias, etc) of this unit. The cross of the beret looks similar to the one used by the french resistance.
Regards,
FANGIO

Apparently at first in the 10th interrallied commando, the French commandos-marines were in the n°4 commando. N°4 Commando had attached to it two troops of Free French commandos from n°10 Commando, under Commandant Philippe Kieffer.
The 177 French commandos-marines (included in the British 4th Commando, formed in March 1941) participated also long before the Normandy landing like the French SAS. During D-day these French commandos (troops n°1 and n°8 of the 4th Commando) landed at Sword Beach in front of Ouistreham and the strongpoint "Riva Bella". The French Commandos-Marines were used later in other operations, especially in the Netherlands. At Walcheren for example, the first assault was led by the troops of the 4 Cdo with the French commandos-marines. They landed in Vlissingen (uncle beach). 5 hours later the Royal Marines 41, 47, 48, a Dutch troop and a Norwegian troop landed at Westkapelle.

David
