Re: First lady booed
That's certainly one picture of her, the Republican image. Good thing she was so much more than that.

Re: First lady booed
Most of what I posted is from bios of FDR and Eleanor. Note the state of race relations in the US in the 1930s and 40s had not changed much since the 1860s lots of lynching and race riots ect. For Eleanor to come out in favor of civil rights made her really unpopular among many Southern Democrats.

I've read a score of bios on the First Couple, each with its own spin.

I find it strange that in roughly a month no one could be bothered to actually take a few minutes on Google to research this rather than blindly speculating. This book appears to describe the incident the OP is asking about and gives an explanation for the troops' reaction: https://books.google.com/books?id=B5Tn4 ... ed&f=false

Not sure about anyone else, but I wasn't that concerned about it.

For the record, I did a search and came up empty. Then I speculated.Stephen_Rynerson wrote:I find it strange that in roughly a month no one could be bothered to actually take a few minutes on Google to research this rather than blindly speculating. Pretty obscure, and the action wasn't political, so it's no wonder it didn't get wider dissemination.Gorque wrote:For the record, I did a search and came up empty. Thanks everyone! The remark she made was stupid in the extreme. No wonder she got booed. This incident is left out of all the accounts I have read about her South Pacific visit which is touted as a success that boosted morale!?

You only have one source so far, right?James A Pratt III wrote:Thanks everyone! The remark she made was stupid in the extreme. No wonder she got booed. This incident is left out of all the accounts I have read about her South Pacific visit which is touted as a success that boosted morale!?
Re: First lady booed
What division is the excerpt from the book referring to?

Not all the pages of the book are viewable in Google Books, but, if I followed it correctly, the unit would probably be part of the 32nd Infantry Division.Gorque wrote:What division is the excerpt from the book referring to?

I think it would have been stranger if a bunch of GIs had a positive opinion of their food.
