Experts have pointed out to me there may have been 100+ prototypes.

You did, but the migration killed a large number of posts.

My question is which "projected variant/prototype"? U.S. Ordnance referred to them as "pilots" rather than "prototypes" and they could be either design pilots or production pilots. So, Medium Tank T6 was a design pilot, it was followed by production pilots for the Medium Tank M4, M4A1, M4A3, and M4A4. Later, the redesigned "Ultimate" M4 variant also featured a large number of design and production pilots. Other modifications, such as the M4A3E2 had pilots. And on and on...
