Depends on how fast you want the material moved. Careful stacking is labor and time consuming.

Yes.
Military Packaging was established during WW2. What worked in peace time failed with large losses during the war.
The first part of this report concerns WW2.
One officer talked about walking through a 100 meter long swamp of sodden corn flakes dotted with mushed Hershey bars, smashed cigar boxes and clothes on a dock in New Zealand. This happened because the New Zealand government refused to make dock workers work in the rain and improper packaging.
The Marines had to take over the unloading because of this.

Standard practice for Quartermaster logisticians was to make "Load Plans" for various means of transport-Ex(CCKW or DUKW, etc.) for mixed loads or single type cargoes
CCKW could fit so many 5 gallon water or gasoline cans in the bed
