The Following US Officers were full Colonels in the 101st Abn Div in May 1945-

Col. Ned D. Moore- Division Chief of Staff
Col. Harry W. O. Kinnard, Jr.- Assistant Chief of Staff G-3
Col. Joseph H. Harper- Commanding Officer, 327th Glider Infantry regiment
Col. Robert A. Ballard- Commanding Officer, 501st Parachute Infantry regiment
Col. Steve A. Chappuis- Commanding Officer, 502d Parachute Infantry regiment
Col. Robert F. Sink- Commanding Officer, 506th Parachute Infantry regiment

You can automatically discount Sink as he had a distinctive pencil mustache

Off Hand My guess is Robert Ballard

Col. George Taylor, 16th Infantry Regiment, Omaha Beach

Hi there. Interesting colour pictures.
Did a little look-around on the net and found several other
images from the same surrender. Worth looking through.
Here's the link: http://pixpast.blogspot.dk

Or simply google: ss-general max simon surrendering

Did a little editing too, hope it helps in identification?

The note:Schwien,Edwin Eugene In company of the first French army in Alsace.1944

I just guess left is Schwien,Edwin Eugene(brigadier general) because left one looks like a brigadier general and I have no other pics of Schwien,Edwin Eugene to compare. Hope anyone can help confirm whether left is Schwien.

And
Who is the Major general on right?

The admiral in left is Charles Andrews Lockwood with Nimitz.

It took me more than 11 years to ID him.

#1 Major General Joseph M. Swing, Commanding General, 11th Airborne Division
1 is not Joseph M. Swing.
The Major general wearing helmet far left is Joseph M. Swing.

So 1 and 2 are still unknown.
We can see 2 is Major general from the pic.
