The official AHF USA quiz thread

#1

Post by Marcus » 19 Aug 2009, 19:37

We've had several different quizzes running here in the forum for a while with great success and this new section has been open for a long while without one, so I'm starting one here too.

The rules are very simple:
The first one to post the correct answer to a question, posts a new question (must be on USA during the 1919-1945 period) and so on.

He was an engineer and inventor. Described as “brilliant” and “innovative”, but also “stubborn” and “eccentric”, he had difficult relations with US Army, so the biggest avail of his designs went to foreign nations (strictly speaking, sold illegaly and smuggled out of country). His obsession with speed and motor-racing also reflected on his military designs.

I knew this won't last long - however, since the aim was to get the quiz started, mission accomplished. :D

Over to the future master of this quiz in Greece.

Thanks.
Now, just name a vehicle that took coil spring suspension systems to "new heights". Never built, but reportedly the concept was proven by component tests.

I see that you got the hint, hehe. Want to elaborate and post the next question, or did you plant a more obvious hint for the others?

Quite frankly, short of time. :? I had to get some urgent vehicle oil, how I'm going to bank to regulate my overdraft limit. Than again go shopping, first for a geared axle, than for coffie/soft & other drinks (Croatian acceptance commission Monday).

It's never dull in Serbian economy! :( )

(If answer is OK, I'll post next question until the end of working time. :) Something nice for Bill, expected to detect this quiz during weekend  )

OK, done with bank bloodsuckers, until my cup of tea is ready, before again "out for action"...

Two of my favourite subjects: artillery and prime-movers - identify these two items.

I am no good with artillery but it looks like a 3" AA gun.

The tractor is most likely an International Harvester TD 18

Good enough, Bill! (photo inscription says it's TD-9).
BTW, this is my first experience with answering via cell-phone (it's both pain & rewarding when you have to learn new tricks in 45)
Anyway, over to Georgia!

My Dear Friend the Prince of Serbia:

If you think you have problems at age 45, think of poor me, soon to turn 70, when it comes to electrical gadgets.

To the question, you are quite correct, or the caption is correct, I pulled the trigger too soon.
The TD9 is slightly shorter and has one exhaust pipe coming up from the motor and the TD 18 has two such pipes and I missed that. The TD 18 was used quite widely but not by the Marine Corps. Quite a few were supplied on Lend Lease to Russia.

I will take the question, but ask for a few hours. In five minutes our whole extended family will descend upon us for the Birthday Party of my youngest Grandson. There will be a lot of wine flowing so my question may be a little bit on the funny side when I post it.

Did not get to it after the Birthday Party, so an ordinary question.
Type of vehicle, brand and use.
