Re: Help to Id. US artillery
Re the pictures submitted by Martti on 07 Mar 2013, 19:28. The gun is a former shipboard 3 inch mark 11 aa gun. They were designed in WW I and were the first purpose built shipboard AA guns of the US Navy. Although used throughout WWII they were being replaced on us capital ships by the 5 inch 25 caliber and 1.1 inch AA guns. This is a survivor of 4 which along with 3-7 inch low angle guns removed from pre WWI built predreadnaughts was sent to midway by the navy to reinfore the armament of the Marine Defense Battalion stationed there.

Re: Help to Id. US artillery
Re Sturm78 pics. Pic no 1 is a naval 7 inch Mark II on a Mark II carriage mounted from 1937 to 1943 in a two gun battery Zeilin at Fort Rosecrans, Harbor Defenses of San Diego. This battery along with a simular one of 3-5 inch 51 cal naval pedistial mounts was put in place prior to the war to train the Marine Artillery Gunners for the Marine defense Battalions as they were to employ the same type weapons. They were taken over by the Army Coast artillery at the start of the war and used for the same purpose as well as providing local defense. They were disarmed in 1943 upon completion of the standard 6 inch Army weapons. The second pic shows a Japanese 120 MM type 3 which was captured and used against its former owners by Us troops.

Re: Help to Id. US artillery
In Europe there were artillery units set up specificaly for firing and evaluating German cannon. Perhaps this use of the Japanese cannon reflects the presence of such a unit?
