P-47
Thr first picture is one of two XP-47H's which tested the unsuccessful Chrysler inverted V engine. The second picture is one of the approximately 200 P-47's sent to the Soviet Union under Lend Lease. The third picture is the XP-47J, modified with lighter airframe, armament, close fitting engine cowling, and separate ventral turbocharger inlet to reduce drag. It reached 811 kph/504 mph. The website aufklarung referenced is the best one I know of.

The 2nd plane is the first P-47 (D-10-RE) delivered to USSR. Note the "SOVEREIGN SENATORS K. OF P." at the fuslage: donated by a New York based Knight of Pythias lodge No. 463 ( what lodge???)
According to http://www.apali.fi/books/rs4_uk/rs4_uk.html 203 P-47 were allocated to USSR of which 7 were lost in transit. Three were D-10-RE modells and were flown via ALSIB-route to USSR, rest were types D-22-RE and D-27-RE. Four of them by ship to N. USSR and the rest by ship to Persia.

Re: P-47
But the engine could not be a standard 18cyl Pratt & Whitney "Double Cyclone". Watch the cross section! In my opinion the engine was a Navy double-row turbo charged engine of the same kind used on the last Corsairs.Jack Nisley wrote:.... Also the cockpit is not regular...it seems a"-C" type, not a full sight "-D,-N" type.

from: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p47_9.htmlThe XP-47J was fitted with a 2800 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2800-57(C) housed inside a close-fitting cowling and cooled by a fan. The ventral intake for the CH-5 turbosupercharger was separated from the engine cowling and moved aft. The four-bladed propeller was fitted with a large conical-shaped spinner.

Sorry, I wrote "Double Cyclone" instead of "Double Wasp" which correct name was R-2800-21. I 'd like to know more about these powerful engines..some copyrights about the oil cooling system of its own 18 heads are still actual and a whole family of powerful Jap motorbikes ('80s Suzuki GSX-R 1100cc, I had one and it was a real beauty!) used these fine tech. releases. The sound of those air&oil cooled engines is absolutely astonishing: no loud better than the song of a "Double Wasp" or a GSX-R or a Porsche "Carrera".
