M1 Garand & M1 Carbine

#1

A technical questions:

Do you know if both weapons use the same semiautomatic firing mechanism ?
Why M1 Carbine didn't need use gas recovery ?
Many Thanks.

Different gas systems

Carbine uses a short stroke captured piston that impacts the operating rod to perform, the cycle of functioning

Garand uses a gas cylinder to push gas directly against the operating rod to perform the cycle of functioning

As to why they have different mechanism is because they were designed by 2 different men at 2 different times.

To elaborate: the Garand or M1 rifle was designed in the 1920. The Carbine was designed circa 1940 or 41 IIRC by a gunsmith at Remington arms. Ammunition & barrel were adapted from a Remington small game rifle & matched to a operating mechanism adapted from other designs. It reflects a further fifteen years experience in gas operated weapons & semi auto operations.

no way in hell. Garand bayonet had a completely different style of mounting boss (Stud) than the Carbine

The mounting boss as the same as the Krag and M1903 Springfield rifle series
