USMC Tables of Organization

#1

Post by Leo Niehorster » 21 Mar 2017, 10:21

Is there a listing somewhere of WWII Marine tables of organization?

I would also be interested in getting/acquiring USMC T/O, (originals only, please). Have only found a few on the internet.

I have Rottman's OOB and Pacific books, but they are very incomplete in this regard.
Same applies to the official USMC five-volume "HISTORY OF U.S. MARINE CORPS OPERATIONS IN WORLD WAR II".
Also have the booklet with the T/O for the Marine Infantry Regiment dated 27 March 1944.

Cheers

I am assuming you have tried the Breckenridge Library at the USMC Schools Quantico Virginia?

I can answer a few limited doctrinal & techincal questions.

Hi Carl,

I checked their website, and they show T/O as available, but have not listed them.
I asked for a list of what they had available. But no reply.

Do you have a contact person there?

Unfortunatly no contacts. Part of the problem is there were dozens of TO/TE, & in multiple seperate documents. You may need to be very specific with the request.

Also the last time I searched there I found the periodicals I was looking for were not indexed at all. We found them on the shelves, but the librarians could not find them in the computer index. I also suspect the library is still understaffed.

Greetings Carl!
Initially, I am looking for the "C" Series T/O which make up 1/The Marine Division, and 2/ the various Defence Battalions on 7 December 1941.

Later, I would like to see the "D" Series, and so on to the "F" Series.

Preferably, the various divisions (and later other units) would include a listing of units and deviations from the T/O at specific dates.

Yes, quite a list. But It is being done for the German and British, and even for the Japanese armies, so why not the USMC? Been strangely lacking.

I've seen the USMC details on paper & online multiple times. But you say are not interested in secondary sources. You might check the library at the Staff & Command College Ft Levenworth. The Marine Corps TO/TE may also be archived there. Or the USN Amphibious Warfare School, which I believe is still at Norfolk Virginia.

I recall now having a similar conversation with Robert McNamarra 25 or 30 years ago. He also was having trouble obtaining the USMC TO/TE for the Squad Leader game module designs he was working on.

Superficially the Marine division mirrored Army organization, but there were a large number of differences in details.
