US Troops Using German Helmet Covers.

#1

Post by YankeeZulu » 03 Dec 2017, 01:13

Just ran across this on another site. Picture depicts a BAR gunner w/ a German splinter pattern helmet cover. I found this very interesting as I've never seen this practice before, or even heard of it.

Is anyone familiar w/ this? Was this seen very often in-theater? I'm assuming it must've taken some extra manipulation and possibly a bit of field modification for one to fit a US steel pot so well.

Any information on this anomaly is greatly appreciated.

BTW- The picture is apparently of a PFC Floyd Rogers, 38th Infantry Regiment taken on 29 Jun 1944. At the time of this photo, he had received credit for killing 27 enemy snipers. KIA July 12,1944.

Always wondered how Sgt. Saunders became the only GI in the ETO with a camo helmet cover!
(A flying buddy grew up next to "Kirby" the BAR man on the series. Said Vic Morrow refused to carry a genuine Thompson because of the weight and only used a real one when the script required shooting.)

Actually, several U.S. Army units temporarily adopted camouflage similar to what the U.S. Marines were wearing to the Pacific. But a high number of friendly fire incidents put an end to this...

Most of the cast used fiberglass helmets refusing to wear steel helmets

Ummmm, OK? Don't know where you guys are going w/all that.

The questions still stands. That is a what looks very much like a German camo pattern on that GI's helmet. It is CLEARLY not the USMC pattern of the day, which I'm well aware was experimented w/ in ETO. Is there any record of US servicemen donning German camo covers on their steel pots?

Let's try to remain on topic, shall we?

Well if you say it is German then there IS evidence of US troops using them. I would think a cover that fitted a Partrooper helmet would fit a US helmet with few modifications. Now we just have to figure out where on earth US soldiers would get a German Parachute helmet...........................

Actually that's not what I just said. If you think it's something else I'm all ears.

I know I've been away for awhile, but when did this place suddenly become the akfiles?
