What kind of Navy uniform in Olive Drab is dressing José Ferrer ( Lt. Barney Greenwald ) during his role in "The Caine Mutiny" ( 1954 ).

Its a Navy "aviation green."

It was used from the mid 20's to the 70's

Technically aviator greens were only authorized to be worn by Naval Aviators (officers) and Chief Aviation Pilots when assigned to an organization or activity (and pretty broad definition at that, squadrons, carriers, cruiser or battleship scout or observation detachments, fleet air wing hedrons and such) where one's orders for being attached to same specifically used the words "duty involving flying". Having forgotten the background, the character may have been assigned somewhere for duty involving flying and was then put on TAD for the trial. TAD, though would have negated the "duty involving flying" clause of his orders, so he really should not have been wearing greens. Looks good on camera, though.

And talking about this film......I do not understand two things :
Why they paint their faces during a maneuver ? And what is the sense of the Yellow Spot ? After attributed to a cowardice sign.
A great movie anyway.
