American use of captured fuel
American use of captured fuel
Other than the mentioning of Patton siphoning fuel from captured vehicles, was it doctrine for the Americans to utilize captured fuel stores? I've read many examples of Axis forces from North Africa to the Ardennes using captured fuel, but rarely any Allied examples.

The answer is yes we would use captured fuel supplies. I remember reading that Patton captured some on his pursuit across France. The fuel should be tested before use to make sure it is okay.Schmisse wrote: ↑30 Jul 2020, 19:27Other than the mentioning of Patton siphoning fuel from captured vehicles, was it doctrine for the Americans to utilize captured fuel stores? Is there a particular page or pages that we should read?

Hi Guys,
Given that the Germans couldn't themselves rely fully on their own fuel supplies by the time the US Army met them in the field, it would have been foolish for their opponents to make it "doctrine" to do so.
However, under pressure of practical necessity such initiative was doubtless encouraged on all sides.
Cheers,
Sid
