Artillery shells to fire rations to surrounded soldiers?

Post by Felix C » 15 Aug 2020 22:55

Saw a video regarding the Oct 1944 battle where a battalion of the 36 Div. was surrounded and rations were fired into their perimeter. A video clip showed a shell loaded with rations and fired?
Do not know if this was a stunt or disinformation or actual practice.

Was this a field expedient measure or an actual issue item?

Good afternoon Felix,

Shooting propaganda material with shells on the opposite side is well known, but nothing about food rations..?

Airborne leaflet propaganda: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airborne_ ... propaganda

The Propaganda Shell: http://www.psywarrior.com/PropArtilleryShell.html

As I have read about the trench warfare of the First World War, some german assaults took place only to get food, english corned beef and french white bread were worth running against machine guns.

Perhaps one of the many legends, but it's hard to imagine this terrible madness...

yes. I requested the short duplicate to be deleted. Did not see it originally post and thought it was user error on my part so retyped it and well now see two threads.

Felix, do you have a link to that video? As my father was in the 36th ID (QM Company, signals section), I have all of the 36th ID historical society quarterlies and historical journals going back to the 70's and have never read anything about this.
