Any sources of a name list of American generals & admirals?

Have been looking for the sources a name list of American generals & admirals (including Marines/Coast Guards/National Guards) during World War II for years but still in vain...

Any books, websites, excel files, or Journals/Gazettes are welcomed...

Checked the retired list of USN Registers of Commissioned and Warrant Officers, 1949 and found attached list.

Just a question popped out that what's the actual ranks under "date of rank" column? Was that the rank in the cells on the left? Or the lower rank?

The date of rank is the date of rank for the grade on the left.

Bad news is: You should not use the retired list in gathering your list of officers. Prior to WW2, the highest permanent rank was Rear Admiral; Their were a few temporary promotions to Vice Admiral and Admiral which were "positional" titles. The officer in those ranks held them only while in the position and reverted to Rear Admiral on leaving those positions.

In 1942, Congress authorized officers to be placed on the retired list in the highest rank previously held. That is why there are so many 6/16/42 Dates of rank shown for officers retired before that date.

The actual active list published annual is the best source, but you need to look at the "Admirals" listing as well as the "Medical Corps", "Supply Corps", "Chaplains" and Civil Engineers"

Not to mention you'd have to figure out which ones received retirement promotions (in the vulgar, "tombstone promotions") and which one's actually wore four stars on active duty . . . check the last one on the list, David W Bagley. He retired in April 1947 and his 4th star came on1 April 1947. A tombstone promotion for sure. Same for next one up the list, Frederick C Sherman, his 4th star came with his retirement in March 1947. Same with the next one up, Carpender, and the next one up, Oldendorf, and then Kirk, Fitch, & Hoover, at which point, I get tired of checking. Thing are no always what they seem, but the gents mentioned did not wear four stars on active duty.
