Nice pics. Looks like beautiful country. Any ideas on the history of it. Where abouts in Norway is the wreck. Looks pretty picked over too.

And nice it is!

The wreck is located about 100Km east of Stavanger in South-west Norway.
The plane was equipped as a submarine hunter.
They were on a mission in the North-sea in real bad weather. They probably did a 180 degree navigation error and ended up in Norway and its high mountains......

The plane cought fire, and most of the fuselage had melted down to small pieces of aluminium, as this closeup shows.

Thanks Erik, the pics are great to see. :D Do you know if it is a recognized wreck by any war graves commisions? What of the crew, I wonder. Are there any proper graves for the airmen? Starvanger-Sola was a Luftwaffe airfield wasn't it? Condors and DO 115, I think?

I once knew a Bjornar Svingen from Starvanger. Is it a big place?

The 8 crewmembers are burried on a churchyard in Stavanger city, together with other British, Australian and American airmen.

It has never been cleaned due to it`s remote location. It is about 4 hours of walking in tough terrain. The mountain itself is near 1000M high so helicopter would be the only way to get down parts........

Stavanger is Norways 4th largest city with some 120000 inhabitants.
During ww2 the Germans upgraded the airport at Sola in huge scale. they also built a new airfield only 5KM from Sola. During this 5 years most types of German aircrafts were stationed here. Me109, Me110, Fw190,Ju52, Ju88, Do115, He111, He59 Bv138 and even Ar234
Units like Jg77, Jg5, wekusta, (F)120, (F)122, Kg26,Kg30,Zg76 and numerous maritime units have had some of their staffels here......

Ar 234s; Wow!!
One of them still exists too! Unfortenately on the other side of the world :?
The National Air and Space Museum's Blitz, an Arado Ar 234 B-2 bomber carrying Werk Nummer (manufacturer's serial number) 140312, was one of nine Ar 234s surrendered to British forces at Sola airfield near Stavanger, Norway. It is the sole surviving example of an Ar 234. The aircraft had been on strength with 9./KG 76 (Ninth Squadron/ bomber Wing 76) during the final weeks of the war, having served earlier with the unit's eighth squadron.

Have seen similar on wreckage of a 240 Squadron catalina near Kinlough in Ireland.
This a/c crashed on 22/3/41....fiest RAF CAtalina operation , 1st Catalina to be lost.
Some wing wreckage ...yellow paint with outline of U.S. navy star.
Interesting photos of the Liberator , and good to see the wreckage is left alone.... as a silent memorial to those who died there.
Thank you sir !

Hi Erik, how did you find the wreckage? Is it located somewhere close to coastal bunkers, is that how you stumbled on it?

If you all found Erik's b-24 pics interesting.. then check out the following site:

http://www.sci.fi/~junkers/ISOKARTTAE.html

Some guy in Finland has put togther a map of WWII aircraft crash sites in his country.. most on the map are actually Luftwaffe aircraft.. very interesting as each entry has a link with photos and the history of the crash.. what plane.. date.. crew info.. cause of crash etc.

-cheers
