The Commonwealths casulaties in the Battle of Kohima (spring 1944) was 4064. Thats the figure given in vol 3 of the offical history The War Against Japan so I assume it's based on official figures. But - can anyone tell me the breakdown of these casulaties in dead, wounded, missing and POW?

Sorry, just seen this post.
I recall reading a book about this battle as 4 RWK was a local regiment but cannot recall its title. It went into great detail. A breakdown was given : 2nd Div (2125), 7th Indian Div (623), 161 Brigade/5th Indian Div (462), Kohima Garrison (excl. 4RWK) (401), 1 Assam (@200), 23rd Chindit Bde (158), XXXIII Corps troops (95).
4RWK (161 Bde) arrived 5 April 18+420 strong. Relieved 20 April. Casualties 2+59 dead, 3+125 wounded, 13 missing. 1/1 Punjab in the Bde lost 23 men.
33 Bde/7 Div: 1 Queens (10+173 cas, 4+57 dead), 4/15 Punjab (225 cas), 4/1 Gurkha (65 cas).
4 Bde/2 Div: 2 Norfolk (20+250 cas, 7+71 dead), 1 Royal Scots (71 cas, 17 dead), 1/8 Lancashire Fusiliers (10+67 dead incl. CO)
5 Bde/2 Div: 2 Dorset (330 cas, 95 dead), 7 Worcs (100 cas), 1 Cameron (115 cas, 35 dead, 10 MIA)
6 Bde/2 Div: 1 Royal Welch Fusiliers (235 cas), 2 Durham Light Inf (11+175 cas), 1 Berkshire (422 cas: 2+56 dead, 15+239 wounded, 60 sick.

Initial Kohima garrison was HQ 202 Area, 56 General Purpose Teansport Coy RIASC, 1432 Indian Pioneer Coy, 57 Reinforcement Camp, B&C Coys 1 Assam, 2 plts 5/27 Mahratta plus elements Sher State Regt, 49 and 53 Indian General Hospitals, 80 Indian Parachute Field Ambulance. On 4 April garrison reinforced by 4 RWK, 20 Indian Mountain Bty, 2 Coy Indian Sappers and Miners and 75 Field Ambulance.

The figures do not include casualties suffered by 50 Indian Parachute Bde (500) in delaying the Japanese advance on Kohima at Sangshak.

The RWK Regimental Museum and one of the published books on
Kohima, but I can't recall which one as it was a number of years ago, sorry. Will see if I can find out.

The book is Kohima, The Furthest Battle, written by Leslie Edwards and published in 2009.

2 commanders of 4 Brigade, 2nd Div, died during this campaign, both on the GPT Ridge. Brig W Goschen was killed by a sniper observing an attack on 7 May, whilst Colonel J Theobalds was mortally wounded on 11 May when a grenade landed in the slit trench he was in, during a visit to the front.

The 652 casualties of 50th Indian Parachute Brigade at Sangshak, on the approaches to Kohima, should perhaps be included.
