Hi Dili

I was in a hall in Galleywood Essex where there was a small display of photos of the 104 (Essex Yeomanry) Regt RHA with their horses in 1940. One photo was of them in Marseilles on route for Palestine, riding with the Household Regiment. I only noted it was 1940 not the sure if it even had what month. The thing that interested me the most was the uniform the men were wearing. They were wearing bush hats and 1907 service dress, they looked like they were going to fight the Boer War not the modern war they later fought. Only the officers, signalers and other specialist were mounted. The guns were vehicle towed.

From my limited research the 107 (Nottinghamshire Hussars) Regt RHA was also with the division.

Nice tale. The guns had good pneumatic wheels for towing?

I have 107 RHA on way to Mersa Matruh .Implying was already in Western Desert.

The place to start would be file WO 73/145 in the National Archives, the "General Return of the Strength of the British Army" for the period April-June 1940, which should give the location of every unit of the army at the end of June.

This official publication is not error-free, I have copies of the next one, WO 73/146 covering the next quarter, which indicates among other errors 10,000 South African troops in Britain at the end of Sept. instead of East Africa where they actually were at the time.

On closer inspection, probably not. While WO 73/146 gives the location (nearest town or village) of all units in Britain, I see now that for the 1st Cav Div it says simply "Palestine".
