Good afternoon all,

Above links to an early WWII London map with plotted bombing densities.

I take note that the map's labeled "MOST SECRET" whereas US security regulations have the counterpart as "TOP SECRET".

At bottom of map is note "H E" (= high explosives). Not sure meaning of "P M" at bottom right. Assistance appreciated.

Good afternoon F.B. Coxy and Andy H.,

Appreciate contributions.

That WWI map just might be a "Burn Before Reading" document !

Am still on the lookout for meaning of "P M" as used on the map. Nowadays it might mean "peppermint marshmallows" but generations ago ... ?

The paper versions are actually quite handy, I browsed through them in a book store in Hackney. Made me understand some of the building arrangements around where I lived.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Thanks for this

Back in the 1980's my first house was an old 1890's terraced two bed, and I had a neighbour, old Bert, a retired nurseryman, who had lived there most of his life. We was talking about how the houses were built in, back in the day, and I was explaining to him that the sash windows at the back of the house, that I was planning to replace, hadn't been fitted in properly, instead of fitting tightly to the brickwork, they were all set back about an inch, with a mortar infill. Oh no he said, that's not true, the mortar infill was part of the make good after the bomb. Bomb says I, leaning on the garden fence with a cup of tea in my hand. Yes says Bert, the small housing development behind us was built in the 1960's, before that it was nursery's, and during the Blitz, a German aircraft came over one night and dropped a bomb on them, blowing up a few greenhouses, knocking slates off the roofs, and blowing out all the glass windows., the force of it pushed the window frames in a bit too. We speculated as to why the Germans had such a dislike to the greenhouses, and concluded it was a stray and they were probably after the Royal Small Arms factory down close to the river Lea, a tributary to the Thames, maybe 1 1/2 miles away. This site confirms Bert's story, not that I ever doubted him.

Great story. Ran a lot there when I lived in London. Beautiful spot.

If I read the map correctly, then the space for the new Hackney Council Service Centre was cleared by a parachute mine.
