Field Marshal Deverell

Post by AJK » 28 Mar 2020 19:05

Hi,

There seems to be a gap in the assignments for (at that time) Major-General Cyril Deverell (later FM and CIGS) between 1925 and 1927. It appears that he commanded the United Provinces District, India between 13 December 1921 and late 1925/early 1926, and was appointed Quartermaster-General of the Indian Army on 25 February 1927. The London Gazette dated 2 July 1926 (page 4407) announces his award of the Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire with the notation "late General Officer Commanding, United Provinces District, India", indicating that he had given up that posting at the latest in early 1926. Can anyone provide any information on his posting during 1926-1927?

Thanks,

AJK

Hi AJK,

I have been through the volumes of the Monthly Army List for 1926-1927. Until March 1926 he is still listed as GOC United Provinces District, but that is properly due to delayed update as a passenger list (from Ancestry) shows that he arrived at Plymouth from Bombay on 25th Nov. 1925. For the rest of 1926 and until May 1927 there is no appointments for Deverell. The Monthly Army List for May 1927 (again delayed) shows his appointment as QMG India as of 25th Feb. 1925. Same shows Maj-General George McKenzie Franks as GOC United Provinces District as of 13th Dec. 1925, and the Indian Army List for October 1925 shows Deverell as GOC until 13th Dec. 1925, but also list Franks as officiating (no date). My guess is that Deverell left early Oct. and went on leave until his appointment as QMG. I believe that British Army officers was entitled to 12 months leave when vacating an appointment as district GOC in India, but I can’t find my source on this again.
Kind Regards

Hi Steen,

Thanks very much for your research into this question. I too remember reading somewhere that officers were entitled to extended leave upon returning from service in India, so most likely that was the case with Deverell.

Just to confirm that the half-yearly Army Lists that give details of officers' careers shows Deverell
District Commander India 13.12.21 to 12.12.25
QMG India (local Lt.Gen to 12.03.28) 25.02.1927 to 02.07.1930
