Rommel's Victors
Rommel's Victors
Really, was Harold Alexander, or was Bernard Montgomery the victor of Erwin Rommel in North Africa ?
I have heard this controversy for many years...
Thank for your answers.

hi,
in the 2nd row of the "victors" stand the submariners and the fliers who, in July - October 1942, decimated Rommel's fuel supply coming across the Med.
greetings, the pb

Re: Rommel's Victors
How about Erwin Rommel who defeated himself by creating impossible expectations for the Afrika Corps until his bluff was called at El Alamein.
No one will know for certain whether Rommel could have broken the El Alamein line in August 1942 with a different 8th Army Commander, but the position was strong and had no open flanks for Rommel to exploit. The Rommel would probably lose a battle of attrition at the end of a long line of communications - as he did Op Crusader, against Cunningham and Ritchie.

Brooke should also be listed as a major contributor. He picked Monty as he believed him to be the best general he knew. He also picked Alexander to command over him with special instructions to let Monty do what he wanted. Where other generals were pressured into attacking too early with disasterous results, Alexander and Brooke took the political flak while Monty got on with sorting out 8th Army and beating Rommel.

I also heard about it so much but did not know much about it.
