Post by varjag » 27 May 2003 11:04

Has anyone out there got good pictures of the following Australian military issue weapons; L9A1 pistol, Austen Mk 1 SMG, F-1 and L2A1 rifle? Thanks in advance to any respondents, Varjag

Hello,

The L9A1 pistol is simply a Browning HP35

Image

The Austen SMG is simply an Australian copy of the British Sten SMG (usually a Sten MkII)

Image

The F1 is a 9 mm SMG, a replacement for the Australian Owen SMG

Image

The L2A1 rifle is simply the well known belgian FN FAL self-loading rifle ... or is there an other L2A1 rifle during WW2 ? Because this one is surprinsingly modern in your list :)

Thanks David for those piccies. Not quite what I had hoped for. The Australian issue L9A1 pistol certainly is a Browning HP - but not quite the plastic-butted modernity that u showed but rather a wood-butted early type. I'm afraid you are wrong about the Austen. It certainly mostly was a STEN but it had two pistol-grips and a folding-stock, all borrowed from the German MP 38/40 - and was never much loved by Australian troops who preffered the Owen.

The 3 submachine guns most commonly used by Australian forces during WW2. From top to bottom: A 9mm Owen Mark 1, a .45 ACP Thompson and a 9mm Austen Mark 1 submachine gun.
