This photo came from the AWM which I got from: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -WWII.html
My question is what machine gun does that fellow have? Not the SMG, the MG with the bipod.
What MG is this?

Re: What MG is this?
A bit of a guess, but the AWM has a MG08/15 converted to .303. In 1942 (1943???), the Australian Army rounded up WW1 era German machine guns from musuems, veterans associations and maybe private collections (very different gun laws back then), converted them to .303 and (I think) issued them to militia units.
Lewis guns were widely used in WW2 and have heard, but not seen photographic evidence of, that removing/ modifying the heat shield from them was common.
Maybe this is a MG08/15 converted to an aircooled .303 weapon with some kind of heat shield fitted.

I can see a carrying handle running from the breech end of the barrel to the aft end of the receiver. No ammunition belt. I am wondering if this is a mockup for training?

I'm sure this picture and discussion has been posted earlier, but can't find it again. The idea of a mockup and a few other possibilities was also mentioned.
