To be heroic you don't have to win, to be heroic is sufficient.
And the only important part was that Britain wouldn't lose the war, the worst case was a peace treaty with Germany.
Britain was waiting for something to happen because it was (slightly) probable that something would happen.
Hitler didn't have such an option.
