Thank you!
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Thanks Sheldrake

I was mainly using the recoil springs on the 4.5in as a guide, the 60 pdr has no such recoil system.
Buy the carridges you mention, would make it difficult to spot.

Ian.

Hi Ian

The 60pdr MkII and 4.5 inch gun MkI were mounted on the same carriage, 60 pdr MkIVP as noted. Hogg in his book British and American Artillery of World War 2 states that the 4.5 inch gun was the 60 pdr barrel relined. Hence it is impossible to tell them apart.

The 4.5 inch gun MkII and the 5.5 gun Howitzer were mounted on the same carriage. The "horns" or recoil system as you have named them were in fact the balance springs. Again very hard to tell apart at most angles as the additional length of barrel of the 4.5 inch gun is not always apparent.

Thanks for clearing that up Clive, sorry I never replied earlier but this site was deemed unsafe for some reason.
