MARC 1940??

Post by tigre » 16 Mar 2019 13:46

Hello to all :D; a little query...............................

The 11th Hussars, (Prince Albert's Own) in 1940.

From the War Diaries - 11/6/40 .............It halted 200 yards away and was fired on and captured. It was decided to return, and whilst fixing the steering of the MARC, towing arrangements were made.....................

Which one was this vehicle? TIA. Cheers. Raúl M 8-).

Hello Aber :D; thanks for joining :wink:. AFAIK at that time the regiment was equipped with obsolete Rolls-Royce and Morris armoured cars, maybe some Guy armoured car. but which one was called MARC (slang?).

and again on 21/6/40. 2Tp B Sqn (TSM Howarth) was ordered to carry out a recce of EL GUBI. At 1110 hrs, a message was received that the MARC was wrecked. The crew were safe and the other cars had dispersed.
At 1120 hrs, 3Tp (2Lt Halliday) was sent to EL GUBI to help.

Helleo Raul,
Maybe that Marc stands for Morris armoured car:
30 served with the 11th Hussars in the North African Campaign in 1940
But why the nickname Marc is spelled in french?????
Marc= Morris Armoured Car ????
Kindly regards from Belgium
Prosper :wink: :wink:

Just a guess to use all the letters;

Morris armoured reconnaissance car

Normal terminology was simply armoured car, which can been seen abbreviated as AC or armd car. Latterly light reconnaissance car was abbreviated as LRC.
