Johor military force , Malaya.

Post by dont tell them pike » 30 Aug 2019 11:26

Johor in southern Malaya had it's own military force which came under the command of the Australians .
At the time of the Japanese invasion not sure if they were issued or wore steel / sun helmets or the M1908 equipment instead of the bandolier.

Hi D.T.H.P

A nice little post, thank you

I think they were about the size of a small battalion, lightly armed, and had limited training. I don't think they saw any action, but I'm unsure if it was because of their lack of training and equipment or a concern over their loyalty to the British. There was also a company of Johore Engineers, but these were a volunteer unit, including Europeans among their ranks.

Nice photos, from what i've read the UK authorities weren't keen on local 'independent' forces having the latest kit, instead older kit used such as the bandolier instead of the m1908 kit.
The sultan did equip his military force with many machine guns and apparently the JMF were good in marksmanship competitions.
Not sure if the JMF was fully equiped with helmets, even the Federated Malay states volunteer force continued to wear bush/ slouch hats at the time of the Japanese invasion.

On the - Take a walk down memory lane (Malaysia) facebook page , an open public group , there is a short film from 1938 showing the JMF, a few appear to be wearing British helmets .

An interesting web page on the Johor Military Force is here

https://wiki2.org/en/Royal_Johor_Military_Force

And suggests a total of 2000 personnel in 1941
