Market Garden code name

Post by Comms » 10 Oct 2019 11:02

Does anyone know why the Allies have chosen the names "Market" and "Garden" for this operation in september 1944?
Or was it randomly chosen? I know Market was for the Airborne part and Garden for the XXX-Corps part, but do these names have a connection with these parts of the Operation?

Kind regards

British code words were intentionally picked to have no connection with the operation itself. The idea of code words is to reserve secrecy not supply the enemy with cryptic clues.

Normally, but who actually chose Market Garden? First Allied Airborne Army? 21 Army Group?

It must have come from 21 AG since they ordered it.

Well SHAEF actually ordered it - 21 Army Group proposed it.

The RAF used vegetable names for coastal areas that they mined - and referred to the air operations as 'Gardening'. I wonder if the Allies thought it likely that the Germans knew about the use of these references in mining operations, and played them accordingly with some mis-directional information?

21 AG ordered its subordinate armies to implement it and so named it as after all each army had a part of the code name to its self. SHAEF ordered "an operation" 21 AG named it.

Thank you all for your responses. So I can conclude that "Market" and "Garden" were randomly chosen and had nothing to do with each other.
And (probably) accidentally putting these two operational code names together, they are a good match!
