Any Questions for My Great Uncle Bob?
Any Questions for My Great Uncle Bob?
Many of you have read his story in this forum that I posted a few days ago.
As I mentioned in my last post, I will be visiting my Uncle in England next month. It just occured to me that it would be interesting for this forum for me to ask him any questions about his experiences that any of you may have. I can bring them with me and post his responses on this forum.
Fire away guys! If I can access a computer when I am there (highly likely), I'll post his answers when I see him.
Regards.

Andy, when asking it, I think you already know that there were Italian planes over England during ww2. Can you tell me about units/types of italian planes involved?(Although I'm sure there were few of 'em).Andy H wrote:...

best,
AHLF.
An excellent article on the subject can be found on Hlkan Gustavsson's page at this adress:

Andy H,
I see you posted here too!
I will add your questions to the list that I will take me. As you can see, no one else has responded as of yet. Hopefully, some others will as he is a veteran of the Battle of Britain.
I learned through my cousin today in an e-mail that he was very happy that I posted his story and is willing to answer any and all questions.
I have added a few of my own:
1. Please describe your first combat experience in a Spitfire.
2. How much training did you have before joining your first squadron?
3. Were you and your fellow pilots confident that you could stop the Germans from gaining air superiority thus leaving the door open to invasion?
4. During the Battle of Britain, please describe what the average RAF pilot was going though.
5. During your capture, did you ever take the threat of being shot if you did not cooperate seriously?
6. Please describe the de-briefing you received upon your return to England after being captured.
Those are mine. Anyone else? Come on guys! You can do better!

One question I generally WWII Romanian airmen is where did they get their passion for flying. I guess it is a good question for every pilot. What made him join the RAF and not the Royal Navy, for example?
But if you are going to interview your uncle anyway, why not do it thoroughly and write an article about him. With 15 kills he is an ace and his story would be more than welcome on the WWII ACES STORIES site (http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/aces.htm). The RAF section is pretty slim. Dariusz would surely welcome any new addition.

The General,
I know he has some group shots of his squadron in his bedroom. In fact, you might say that his bedroom is a bit of mini museum. He has his insignia and medals in display cases along with pictures of his squadrons. There are also pictures of him in his Spitfire that were taken just for show. He also has many models of Spitfires that he has collected over the years.
I don't think that he has any German souvineers since pilots would not be in a position to get them unless he did when he was based in Europe. I will add that to the list as well.
I will see what I can do about getting his pictures scanned. They are old so I am not sure what he will say to that. Remember, he is 85 now and not exactly aware of technological developments!
