4,963 Canadian troops landed at Dieppe in an amphibious raid, On August 19th, 1942.

The raid was planned by the British to test German defences on the French coast, and to cause the Germans to increase those defences, drawing resources away from Africa, Russia and Italy.

Of the 4,963 troops that landed, only 2, 210 returned to England. The Canadian regiments took 3,367 casualties, including 1, 946 POWs and 907 killed.

This raid was one of the darkest moments in Canadian military history.

We will remember them.

If it was not for Dieppe, we would never have had D-Day, their sacrifice was not in vain.

I have studied Dieppe and written essays on it and those troops deserve more recognition for what they did. But then so does the role of all Commonwealth troops during the war in general.
