Hello!
According to this source:
http://www.time-capsules.co.uk/picture/number982.asp
the second ship is HMS Tartar.
Nevertheless, you've got all the rest correct, so over to you again!

Best regards, Aleks

The general appearance screams "British", the funnels look like a Tribal ....
but there seems to be two sets of torpedo tube and there's something odd with the B gun emplacement
:? :?

Thanks, PB.

To pose another RNN-related question, which Dutch warship was damaged during the 9 April 1942 raid on Trincomalee? (And for a bonus point, what was it hit by?)

hi, Rob,

Light cruiser HNLMS SUMATRA, a sister ship of the already sunk JAVA, was the only Dutch ship present in harbour, JACOB VAN HEEMSKERCK and ISAAC SWEERS being with Forces A and B, but what she was hit with, I could not find out.

Well done, PB, it was indeed Sumatra.

According to J. Anten, H. Klom, D. van Lunsen, R.F. van Oosten, D. Pilkes and M.G.J. van Zeeland, Hr. Ms. Kruisers 'Java' en 'Sumatra', Zierikzee, Netherlands: Asia Maior, 2001, Sumatra was hit by a bomb which did not explode. We know that it was a 800kg bomb because that is what all the Kates which attacked Trincomalee were armed with.

Back to you again,

Rob

Temporary Lieutenant Robert Hampton GRAY, R.C.N.V.R., a Corsair pilot on Formidable, who received a posthumous VC for his sinking of a Japanese warship on 9 August 1945. I believe that his VC was the RCN's first and that it was the last one awarded in WW2.
