I'm looking for help finding a source for Dutch military abbreviations to May 1940. I am looking specifically for the meaning of 'LW' and 'LD.' The former is assumed to be Landweer, but this is unconfirmed. These are markings that would be on the top of a Dutch (Mannlicher) rifle receiver, and stamped into the left side of the butt stock of the rifle.
Any idea what these might refer to? Thanks!
Pat

Hi Prosper,
Thanks for your reply. Is that from a list of Dutch abbreviations? I've had no luck finding anything for 'LD.'

Re: Source for Dutch military abbreviations?
Prosper,
No worries, your English is fine, and readily comprehensible! Thank you for your contribution.
I have a newly-made contact in the Netherlands who is looking into this, too. Apparently, 'LD' has been unknown in the Anglophonic world for quite awhile. 'LW' has been mostly accepted as referring to either 'Landweer' or 'Landwacht.' It's the 'LD' that's the current mystery. I have an 1896 dated, Steyr-built Model 1895 Dutch Mannlicher rifle that has an 'LD 25' marked on both the receiver and the left side of the butt stock. It is completely matching throughout, and I'd love to learn exactly what that refers to.
Does anyone have any documented references to this?
Thank you in advance,
Pat
