Surrounded Belgian forces near German border holding out for weeks in May 1940?

Post by Sid Guttridge » 22 Oct 2020 12:43

A YouTube sequential hourly map of the 1940 campaign shows a small group of Belgian forces holding out near the German border for a couple of weeks, until after the Belgian surrender: https://youtu.be/Zg7ZuET6oe4

Who were these guys?

Or was it a mistake by the map makers?

Cheers,

Sid.

I would suggest that the maps are showing various Belgian Forts still holding out.

These Forts surrendered on

Liege Forts:

Fort Aubin-Neufchâteau on May 21st
Fort Battice on May 22nd
Fort Tancrémont on May 29th (after the Official Belgian surrender on the 28th)

Namur Forts:

Marchovelette on May 18th
Suarlée on May 19th
Malonn on May 19th
Saint-Héribert on May 21st
Andoy on May 23rd
Maizeret on May 23rd

Hi Dave,

Thanks, that looks probable.

Cheers,

Hi Sid,
That must be a mistake.
The only belgian fortress that surrendered AFTER the 28th of may was the fort of Tancremont which surrendered on the 29th of may, 36 hours after the belgian capitulation.
Kindly regards rom Belgium
