Austrian L3/33's?

#1

Post by seungseung22 » 09 Sep 2022, 18:08

Hi there,

It says on the Wikipedia page of the L3/33 that Austria recevied 36 L3 Tankettes in 1935.
If anyone could provide me with some pictures or more information about the vehicles, that would be great.

Information is from Gli Autoveicoli combattimento dell’Esercito Italiano, vol I, pp.549–550.

Austria purchased a total of 60 vehicles from Italy, 30 were CV33 and 30 were CV35. The vehicles were equipped with a single Schwarzlose 07/15 cal. 8 and carried 4,800 rounds.

The first 15 CV 33 were delivered between July and December 1935. Fifteen more were ordered and delivered by the end of January 1936. Thirty CV35 were ordered in September 1936 and delivered by the end of March 1937.

The CVs in the österreichische Panzerwagen-Bataillon were organized as a battalion of four companies. Each company had three platoons with four vehicles each. There was one vehicle for the company commander and two reserve vehicles, making a total of 15 vehicles per company. The book states there was one additional vehicle for the battalion commander, but that is not confirmed.

A further order for 15 CV35 lf (lanciafiamme) and 15 M11/39 tanks (the latter planned as a fifth company for the battalion) was never completed due to the Anschluß.

The Austrian battalion was absorbed in the Heer as the Panzerabteilung 33 in the 4. Leichte Division. While this source states that the battalion kept its CVs until the division's conversion to the 9. Pz Division, I am hesitant to state the CVs were used in Poland. The Axis History entry for the österreichische Schnelle Division states the battalion had 72 CVs, while Fronte terra carri armati 2/II also states two shipments of 36 vehicles each. Given that Gli Autoveicoli is better researched and newer (2002 v 1972), I would go with Gli Autoveicoli.
